Current HIV surveillance supplementary reports indicate that there is a growing number of individuals 50 years and older that are contracting the HIV virus and/or living with AIDS. The current rate of infection for individuals within this age group is approximately 38.1 individuals per 100,000 individuals aged 50 and older within the US population. This is an alarmingly high rate of infection among individuals within this age group, which means that a great deal of work must be done in order to help to stem the tide of HIV infection among individuals within this age group. Those individuals that are aged 55 to 59 are infected with HIV at a rate of approximately 11.5 individuals per 100,000, which is also an alarmingly high infection rate, which makes this age group infected at the second highest rate per 100,000 individuals within the 50 and an older age group. This means that these individuals make up approximately 30% of the individuals aged 50 years and older that are infected with the HIV virus or are living with AIDS. This essentially means that one out of three individuals that aged 50 and older that are infected with the HIV virus or 55 to 59 years of age, which means that this age group is also at a very high risk for contracting the HIV virus.
